Bio
Jannon "J.J." Barrow is a native of Northern California. She grew up in the North Bay, where some residents still put on their Sunday best before heading south-east to cross the big red bridge into San Francisco. Her first reporting gig was in sixth grade, covering sports and writing an advice column for her elementary school newspaper in Sonoma County. She quit going to the school a few months into the year, but kept writing for its paper.A decade later, Barrow is a graduate student at the University of California, Berkeley, earning her master's degree in journalism. She is addicted to transportation reporting, enjoys arts and technology coverage, and stories that are investigative in nature. She has a bachelor's degree in Media Studies and American Studies from UC Berkeley, with an emphasis on neighborhoods and public policy.Barrow has reported for Mission Loc@l in San Francisco, Berkeley Patch and The Echo Times in Kentfield, CA. Her work has appeared on SFGate.com, multiple Patch news sites, Muni Diaries, SF Public Press and Huffington Post news sites. She has contributed to Society of Professional Journalists Region 11 Mark of Excellence award-winning stories and participated in a Dow Jones News Fund multimedia editing program at Western Kentucky University.Previously, she spent two summers in communications internships at Oakland, CA nonprofits, learning about community issues like job accessibility, environmental justice, educational equity and incarceration.She is committed to community journalism, and hopes to showcase the big picture realities of small places as a well-rounded multimedia journalist. In her spare time, she enjoys long urban walks, biking, hiking, browsing in brick and mortar bookstores, visiting gardens, galleries and museums and finding the best coffee spots with vegetarian sandwiches — all the while reading the news as widely as she can and looking for stories everywhere she goes.
